All we need

From the “Bride of Self Control” chapter of The Bride’s Handbook: A Spiritual and Practical Guide to Planning Your Wedding by Amy J. Tol:

“I think God genuinely enjoys the unique homes and lifestyles that we create with his blessing. I even think he enjoys the beautiful plans we incorporate into our weddings. After all, he’s a creator, too.

But there’s a big difference between enjoying God’s material blessings, and putting our faith in those materials. …

And when it comes to weddings, materialism can be especially vicious, pushing a bride to replace her excitement about marriage with an insatiable drive for the best wedding around. Her priorities get twisted. And suddenly she’s getting more worried about the kind of vegetables being served at the reception than about the health of her love relationship. …

Consider Proverbs 23:5: “Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.” …

“But their trust should be in the living God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment” (1 Tim. 6:17). God will give us what we need, and he wants us to really enjoy it. But we’ll miss out on that joy when we trust in the things rather than the Giver. As Hebrews 13:5 challenges us, we can “be content with what [we] have” – thanking God for the blessings we’ve been given.”
